Sunshine and self care

Hi Reader

How are you?

It’s the height of summer and people are going on holiday and doing fun things, but many caring feel like we’ve been sidelined, struggling on alone.

But your happiness is important and you matter.

It’s not easy to get away, so what can you do to make the most of the sunshine and bring happiness into your life?

  • Connect to those who care
Sometimes it is down to us to reach out to friends and family to connect. Everyone is busy. Be proactive and call those who make you feel better. Chat on the phone or meet up and enjoy time with those who genuinely care about you.

  • Get out in nature

Even if you live in a city and you can’t travel far. I actually look in peoples gardens and take delight in the beautiful flowers blooming. If you look, there is beauty everywhere.

  • Contemplate gratitude

I know life can be tough whilst caring. I was mentally and physical wrecked at one time. But focusing on the things you are grateful for actually makes you feel better. I even do it now. If I have had a hard day, I think of five things I was thankful for before I drop off to sleep. Try it and see how you feel.

I joined Donna Bentley-Carr on her ‘Caregivers’ Burnout’ podcast, sharing stories and all sorts of ways we can look after ourselves before hitting crisis. Click here to listen.

Remember, you’re amazing in all that you do. And if you do need support, get in touch with your local Carers Centre or you can contact me via a new platform.

Sending love,
Sara x

November 2026 What I Wish I’d Known as a Carer Myself and Neal in Gran Canaria 2010 Hi Reader How are you? It’s been a few months since my last newsletter, as I’ve been busy editing my second book. It’s the story of caring for Neal and how the experience impacted almost every area of my life. Caring is complex. It can affect us mentally, emotionally and physically in ways we could never have imagined. Looking back, there are so many things I wish I’d known. So I thought I’d share a few of the...

June 2026 Nurturing your Support Network – Looking After You Hi Reader How are you? The theme for this year’s Carers Week is ‘Building Carer Friendly Communities’. It took me years to find the support I needed, so what can you do now to ensure you have the right support around you? Register with your local GP – let them know you are in a caring role, so you are on their system. Get in touch with Social Services to have a Carers Assessment, to find out what is available for you. April 2026 Putting yourself first– so caring becomes easier Hi Reader How are you? Caring can be all consuming that your life is not your own anymore. We can be pulled sideways, putting everyone before ourselves and then feeling exhausted. But there are better ways to care, so that you feel better, and then find time to even enjoy life – and it’s important that you do. Join me for an online talk this Friday 17th at 2pm, to learn why carers struggle and the ways to overcome. I’m very excited...
