Boosting your wellbeing during winter

Beating the Winter Blues

Hi Reader

Winter can be a tough time for carers. I always fell ill in January whilst caring! Shorter days, cold weather and increased responsibilities can leave many of us feeling below par, so I have three simple but effective tips to help protect your wellbeing this winter.

1. Protect Your Energy, Not Just Your Time
When you’re caring for others, energy can drain faster than time.
– Try to build in small daily recharge moments (even 5–10 minutes)
– Say no to non-essential tasks where possible
– Focus on one manageable thing at a time
You don’t have to be all to everybody all of the time!

2. Get Light and Fresh Air Whenever You Can
Lack of daylight can have a real impact on mood and sleep.
– Aim for a short walk or time outdoors during daylight hours
– Sit near a window or open curtains fully in the morning
– If going out is tricky, gentle stretching near natural light can help
A little light can make a big difference.

3. Stay Connected — You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Isolation can creep in during winter, and it certainly did for me.
– Check in with one trusted person each week
– Join a carers’ group (online or in-person). Check out your local Carers Centre, or Carers UK and Carers First for their sessions.
Share how you’re really feeling — let others know.

And if you haven’t checked out the book, Who Cares? please do! Award-Winning book and packed with ideas and solutions to help improve your life whilst caring.

Take care of you!
